Film Review: Flatliners

Film Review: Flatliners

This story of medical students playing God to cross the boundaries of life and death is a cautionary tale of humans wanting to know too much of what lies beyond death. Peter Filardi’s clever screenplay takes us to a place where death represents a place in which we are able to atone for our sins. As personified by Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt, the medical students are a mixed breed in which each has their own reason for going through with the experiment.

Although all the character arcs build around each of them atoning for what they’ve done (or think they’ve done) to others, the film works because the underlining theme is that none of us should try to play God, not even doctors (who are so often accused of that very thing) and that we should live in the now rather than be consumed by the mistakes that me made in the past.

Director Joel Schumacher brings to the film an eeriness that he brought to THE LOST BOYS and that would carry over into his A TIME TO KILL, 8MM, and THE NUMBER 23. He has made films in just about every genre but it is in the suspense drama that he excels at and it shows here. Cinematography by Jan de Bont (who will later direct SPEED, THE HAUNTING remake, and LARA CROFT, TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE) and with original music by composer James Newton Howard the film is an unsettling look into the look into human nature.

Head on down to Theatreland and Behold the Range of Delights On Offer

Head on down to Theatreland and Behold the Range of Delights On Offer

Dubbed Theatreland, London’s West End is a veritable treasure trove of live performances and electrifying stage shows. Indeed, cited as the largest theatre district in the world, the London scene is bigger than Britain’s film industry and pulls in more crowds than New York’s Broadway! Boasting a long tradition of both established and new acts, there is definitely something to entertain even the most sceptical of theatre goers.

The first playhouse, which was built in 1576 and aptly named The Theatre, set the scene for what was to become a long and successful entertainment genre for England’s capital. And, with added investment over the years, the area now boasts over 25 theatres. Not only that, but 2008 saw a record 13 million people venture into Theatreland to watch the performances on offer.

In addition to the host of visitors drawn to the shows, many well known film stars, from both the UK and across the water, are also attracted to the West End. In fact, since its inception there have been a number of actors and actresses who have taken to the stage, including Dame Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Radcliff and Kevin Spacey.

Managing to superbly fuse the modern with the traditional, London theatre has a knack for knowing just which performances are right for the time: as a result, there is always an interesting mixture of old and new shows available.

For instance, the longest running West End show, Mousetrap by Agatha Christie, has been on the stage for 56 years, whilst the longest running musical, Les Misérables follows closely behind at 23 years. At the same time, there is always a selection of fresh and original performances presented, such as Billy Elliott and The Producers.

Consequently, with so much on offer, there are numerous opportunities to take advantage of the many London theatre breaks on offer. A quick search of the internet will yield an assortment of different deals and it is often possible to pick up a range of attractive offers, including hotel bookings and discount vouchers for the city’s other attractions.

Indeed, as well as being famous for its theatre, the English capital is also home to a wealth of other sights of interest and cultural treats. And, if you decide that the theatre is quite enough culture for one weekend, you can always embark on a shopping spree or relax in one of the many cafés or bars scattered around.

So, if you fancy treating yourself, a theatre break in London’s West End could be ideal for you. Not only are there a number of exciting performances to enjoy year round but an even greater number of attractions to see around the capital at any time of the year.

The Best Sports Movies Of All Time

The Best Sports Movies Of All Time

It is really pretty easy to define what a sports movie is.  Any movie that revolves around an athlete—or athletes—or takes place in an athletic setting can be placed in this category.  But what makes one of these movies great can be much harder to pinpoint.  If you were to ask a person what it is that makes a great sports movie great, you may hear one of any number of responses.  Sports movies can be considered great for their ability to be anything from entertaining and funny to suspenseful, heart-warming, and inspiring.

Some, perhaps the best, contain a combination of the above traits.  They will make you cry your eyes out in one scene and laugh out loud in the next.  They will have you cheering for the hero when he is down and out.  And they will have you booing his archrival, whether it is the member of another team or a crooked prison warden.

You may or may not disagree, but here is our list of the 25 best sports movies of all time, with the years they were released, the sports they featured, and who starred in them.  Our list includes all styles of movies within the genre—important directorial feats, such as Scorsese’s Raging Bull, as well as documentaries like  Hoop Dreams, comedies like Talladega Nights, Caddyshack, and Major League, and the movie that spawned the franchise of all franchises, Rocky.
